ENAIS — European Network for AI Safety

ENAIS (pronounced “e-nice”) is the primary pan-European network explicitly focused on existential risk from AI. Founded in March 2023, it differentiates itself from other European AI safety organizations by its explicit x-risk framing.

Mission

Per ENAIS’s public mission: “advance AI Safety in Europe, mitigate risks from AI systems, particularly existential risks, and enhance collaboration among the continent’s isolated AI Safety communities.” ENAIS aims to be “the go-to access point for information and people interested in AI safety in Europe.”

Reach

  • Members from 13+ countries
  • Maintains an open network map of European AI safety researchers and groups
  • Funded by Lightspeed grants

National Chapters

ENAIS seeds and supports national chapters of the European AI safety community:

  • DNAIS — Dutch Network for AI Safety (sister organization)
  • AIS Brussels (seeded with members from ea-belgium)
  • Similar national chapters active or emerging in other European countries

Leadership

Co-director Gergő Gáspár is currently spearheading the AIS Brussels seeding effort, with 4+ years of EA/AIS community-building experience including founding EA and AIS Hungary.

Why ENAIS Matters

European AI safety work was historically decentralized, scattered across national EA chapters, university clubs, and research labs. ENAIS plays the connector role: matching researchers to projects, sharing information about EU policy windows, coordinating funding, and maintaining the visibility of European AI safety to international funders. It also acts as the explicit x-risk network in Europe, distinguishing itself from “responsible AI” or “AI ethics” framings.
