EU AI Office
The European AI Office is the European Commission body responsible for enforcement and implementation of the EU AI Act, particularly its general-purpose AI (GPAI) provisions, and for the EU’s international engagement on AI safety. It was established by Commission Decision on 24 January 2024 and became operational in May–June 2024.
Roles
Per the EU AI Office’s mandate:
- Enforcement of the EU AI Act, especially for general-purpose AI models with systemic risk
- EU representation in the International Network of AI Safety Institutes (a peer body to the UK and US AISIs)
- Lead on EU contributions to NAAIMES (International Network for Advanced AI Measurement, Evaluation and Science)
- Coordination with national AI authorities across the EU
Frontier AI Initiative
The European Frontier AI Initiative was announced in the Apply AI Strategy in October 2025 and launched at the Summit on European Digital Sovereignty in Berlin in November 2025. Components include:
- The Grand Challenge initiative — fostering sovereign, large-scale European AI models
- The Pilot of the “Science for AI” Pillar of RAISE (Resource for AI Science in Europe) — fundamental research at the AI frontier
Talent Bottleneck
Per AIS Brussels founders, the EU AI Office and the broader Brussels AI safety community are bottlenecked on senior technical AI safety talent — a key motivator for the AIS Brussels seeding effort.
