While timelines address when transformative AI arrives, takeoff concerns how rapidly capabilities and societal impact increase afterward. This subchapter introduces a four-dimensional analytical framework for takeoff scenarios.

The Four Takeoff Dimensions

The Atlas’s framing — see takeoff-dynamics:

  • Speed — how quickly capabilities improve (slow / fast)
  • Continuity — smooth or sudden jumps (continuous / discontinuous)
  • Homogeneity — how architecturally similar AI systems are (homogeneous / heterogeneous)
  • Polarity — how concentrated power is (unipolar / multipolar)

These dimensions are independent. A fast takeoff can still be continuous if it follows scaling-law patterns; a slow takeoff can be discontinuous if punctuated by surprising breakthroughs. Speed: Slow vs. Fast Takeoff

Slow Takeoff

Improvements occur gradually over months or years (GPT-3 → GPT-4 progression). Mathematically: linear or exponential growth.

Key advantage — adaptation time. If safety problems emerge, teams can refine approaches before systems become significantly more powerful. Iterative improvements and institutional coordination become possible.

Fast Takeoff

Capabilities increase dramatically over days or hours through recursive self-improvement feedback loops. Mathematically: superexponential or hyperbolic growth.

Key challenge — only one chance. Current safety approaches rely on testing → identifying → iterating. Rapid advancement might mean systems become too powerful to modify safely. Robust safety measures must be in place from the start.

Five Arguments for Where Takeoff Speed Comes From

1. The Overhang Argument

Hardware overhang — sufficient compute exists, but appropriate software hasn’t been developed. Once it appears, numerous powerful systems emerge rapidly. Data overhang — abundant data exists, algorithms to use it remain underdeveloped. Both are “stockpile-then-trigger” patterns.

2. The Economic Growth Argument

Historical economic patterns (driven by population growth) suggest slow, continuous takeoff: AI augments effective economic populations gradually. Regulatory constraints and task-automation limits could maintain gradual expansion. Counter: rapid labor automation could accelerate growth dramatically beyond historical rates.

3. The Compute-Centric Takeoff Argument

Identifies two feedback loops:

  • Investment loop — economic returns from AI fund more compute and algorithm research, which improves AI, which generates more returns.
  • Automation loop — capable AIs automate AI algorithm and GPU design, increasing capabilities, which automates more labor.

Strength and interplay determine whether takeoff is fast (loops weak counterweights, no regulatory friction) or slow (loops weaker, regulatory friction strong).

4. The Automating Research Argument

Human researchers currently drive almost all AI progress but increasingly delegate to LLMs. As models handle harder tasks, researchers delegate more, easing next-generation training, producing greater research boost — accelerating the field. Eventually AI assistants at superhuman speeds perform all AI research and design — “potentially enabling full automated recursive intelligence explosion.”

5. The Intelligence Explosion Argument

Based on I.J. Good’s 1965 thesis — sufficiently advanced machine intelligence iteratively constructs smarter versions of itself. Each generation builds smarter successors, potentially vastly exceeding human capability. See intelligence-explosion and situational-awareness.

Why machine intelligence has structural advantages over human:

  • Computational resources — scales; humans don’t
  • Speed — humans communicate ~2 words/second; GPT-4 processes 32k words instantly
  • Duplicability — machines copy without 20 years of birth/education/training
  • Editability — code versioning enables regulated variation; humans lack root hardware access
  • Goal coordination — copied AIs share goals effortlessly, unlike humans

These five enable rapid recursive self-augmentation in a way human civilization cannot match.

Stakes for Safety Strategy

The chapter closes with the central practical implication: expert disagreement on takeoff speed is what divides safety strategy, not disagreement on whether risks exist. “Human experts broadly agree AI poses risks requiring responsible development, but differ on whether emerging problems remain noticeable and fixable, or accelerate beyond responsive capacity.”

This framing is important for the wiki: a fast-takeoff pessimist (Yudkowsky-style) and a slow-takeoff optimist (Christiano-style) can agree on the existential risk category while reaching opposite conclusions about which interventions matter.
