ACRAI — Antwerp Center for Responsible AI

The Antwerp Center for Responsible AI is an interdisciplinary research center at the University of Antwerp focused on responsible AI development. Its remit covers bias, explainability, transparency, accountability, privacy, sustainability, and AI governance — drawing on computer science, law, philosophy, sociology, and adjacent disciplines.

Focus

ACRAI’s framing is responsible AI — closer to the FARI register than to the x-risk framing of the KU Leuven cluster. Its contribution to the Belgian ecosystem is in critical AI governance research — empirical and applied work on the deployment harms and mitigations for AI in real systems.

  • Complements the Brussels/Leuven AI ecosystem with Antwerp-based research capacity.
  • Listed in summary-ai-xrisk-belgium-europe as a complementary but distinct node from the x-risk-focused cluster.
